- 4 "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.
- 5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. .
- 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts.
- 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. . .

Once again, I am amazed at how the sermon I hear each Sunday morning is so connected with whatever we are talking about on this blog. I'm praising God for that again today! Steve's sermon focused on THERE IS A GOD!!!
.
In our scripture memory this week, Moses is stressing about how important it is to teach our children about God and His commands. He just stated how foundational and important it is to LOVE GOD. The previous chapter (Deuteronomy 5) is one of the lists of the 10 commandments in the Old Testament that Moses is referring to. The first commandment?
.
Deuteronomy 5:7
.
"You shall have
.
no other gods before Me."
.
MEDITATION OF THE DAY: How can I impress on my children, to love God and put Him first, if I have other gods that I put before Him... spend more time and money for... think about more... am involved with more...????
.
We forget that all around the world there are people bowing down to god's of wood, metal, stone... Steve told a story of being in Indonesia in 2007, when he was speaking at the World Missions Seminar. He wanted to take a picture of some of the local people he had met. He jwould continue to look at their pics and pray for them. He talked to some people in a shop, then decided to go back to visit with them and take their picture. He returned to what seemed to be an empty store. As he made his way toward the back of the store, looking for the shopkeepers, he found them kneeling and praying to their idol. He could see that their god was not his God!
.
Steve reminded us that our nation is also full of many god's... idols. Maybe not as many people in the USA bow down to graven images like those of eastern cultures... or do we? ... money... trophies... recreational vehicles... balls... games... tv... and then, of course, there's celebraties, relationships, the job, academia... We are a nation full of idols!!!
.
How hopeless is that? Idolizing gods of wood, metal, stone, sinfulness... Steve wanted to give us hope! He wanted us to know that...
.
THERE IS A GOD!
.
HE IS ALIVE!
.
So, we sang the song and then...
.
Steve's lesson focused on
.
Acts 17:16-21.
.
It's setting was in Athens, Greece. It was a city with a very similar problem. Paul reminded the people about God, the Great I AM:
.
- There is a supreme being!
- He is the giver of life and breath!
- He is sovereign... determining the times and boundaries of the lives of mankind...
- He created us for a purpose!
- God is near! (Immanuel means "God with us!")
- Repent!
- Judgment is coming!
.
The Outcome? Acts 17:32-33
.
Let's continue to impress on our children and grandchildren that our God is living, breathing, active, involved, and completely FAITHFUL LOVE.
