Then come the next 3 beatitudes:
- BLESSED are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
- BLESSED are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
- BLESSED are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
Mr. Jones continues, "While the first 3 beatitudes strike at the aggressive attitudes toward life, they do not end there. They end, not in a quietism, but in a quest. And the quest for righteousness can now safely take place, after renunciation in spirit; the righteousness produced will not now be a self- righteousness, for the self has been laid down. Nothing is more beautiful than righteousness; nothing is more hideous than self-righteousness."
Have you ever observed that many "righteous people" are not merciful towards the shortcomings of others? Mr. Jones says that, "Righteousness without mercy produces an indigestion countenance... mercy without righteousness is mushy." Righteousness and mercy put together, as Jesus models, becomes purity of heart. Purity of heart is a passion for righteousness and a compassion for people.
As a believer, how do you love Yourself? It begins with the first 6 Beatitudes:
- Be poor in spirit...
- Be a mourner...
- Be meek...
- Be hungry and thirsty for righteousness...
- Be merciful...
- Be pure in heart...
