BLESSED are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
This person knows that life is not about her, it is about God.
.
2.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
This person is convicted of her sin and her separation from God. She realizes that this is the lost condition of mankind. As she mourns for forgiveness, she is comforted to know that Jesus has provided salvation for this hopeless situation.
.
3. Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
.
This person is gentle... willing to follow... not always needing to have her way... she can say, "Jesus lead me!" and not kick and scream when Jesus leads her in a way that she does not want to go. This type of attitude/demeanor will serve her very well in this life on earth.
.
4. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
A daily spiritual hunger and thirst should promote a daily active search for spiritual food and drink - just like daily physical hunger and thirst do for physical food and drink. The promise is that if we seek it, we will find it and be filled.
.
5. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
Offering a servant hand/heart, giving do-overs, extending grace, living a life of compassion for all people is to be merciful. Want mercy? Then, live a life of mercy!
.
IN SUMMARY....
Above, I've given you different ways to remember the beatitudes...
- Semantic - the words and an understanding of the words in the first 5 beatitudes
- Symbolic - a symbol (focus only on the screen bean symbol) for the first 5 beatitudes. Some of them have 2 - choose the one that will help you the most to remember.
- Figural - below you will be given a body motion for each of the first 5 beatitudes. The first one starts at the head and as we memorize them over the next few months, the motions will work their way down our bodies. .
1. Bow your head (poor in spirit)
2. Hands either rub eyes or draw tears coming out of eyes (mourn)
3. Point to cheek (meek rhymes with cheek)
4. Bring your hands up to your mouth and pretend like you are eating and drinking (hunger and thirst)
5. Pat yourself on the shoulder (mercy)
